Gingerbread Houses

ELF DOLL

27" high

Materials:
Closely woven cotton fabric 45" wide, 

1/2 yard green-and-white print.
Scraps of coordinating red-and-white print fabric, 

red felt, and flesh-color velour.
Red double-fold bias tape, 1 1/4 yards.
Red rickrack, 1/2 yard.
White pre-gathered eyelet trim 3/4" wide, 1 yard.
Five 1/4" jingle bells.
White buttons: two 1/2", four 1/4".
Pompons: two 3/4" green, one 1" red.
Brown rug yarn, one skein.

GENERAL DIRECTIONS:
Draw lines across patterns, connecting grid lines.
Enlarge patterns by copying on paper ruled in 1" squares; complete half-patterns along dash lines.
Use dressmaker's carbon and dry ballpoint pen to transfer patterns to wrong side of fabrics, placing pieces 1/2" from fabric edges and 1/2" apart.
Cut out pieces 1/4" beyond marked lines for seam allowances, unless otherwise directed. When cutting additional pieces without pattern, do not add seam allowance.
To assemble dolls and clothes, pin pieces together with right sides facing and raw edges even; stitch on marked lines, making 1/4" eams unless otherwise directed.
Clip into seam allowance at curves and trim corners; turn piece to right side.
Referring to picture, assemble and finish dolls as individually directed.

INSTRUCTIONS:
Body:
From green print fabric, cut two body pieces, two arms, and two pieces 4 1/4" x 14 1/4" for legs.
Cut two feet each of red print and red felt; 

cut four hands of velour.
Stitch body pieces together, 

leaving open between dots for legs and neck.
Turn; stuff firmly.
Fold leg pieces lengthwise 

and stitch long edges together, 

leaving ends open.
Turn; stuff firmly.
Stitch across one end of each leg 1/4" from edge, 

with seam at side and enclosing stuffing.
At other end, turn in raw edge 1/4" and 

baste around circle.
Stitch felt feet to fabric feet in pairs, 

leaving an opening for turning.
Turn and stuff firmly; slip-stitch opening closed.
Slip-stitch folded edge of legs to felt side of feet, 

with leg seams at side.
Insert legs into body, having leg seams toward center; slip-stitch legs and body together securely.
Fold each arm piece and stitch edges together, leaving straight end open.
Turn; stuff firmly and turn in raw ends as for legs.
Stitch hands together in pairs, 

leaving straight end open.
Turn; stuff.
Insert hand into wrist and slip-stitch in place.
Form "thumb" by making a long stitch across hand at mark; pull thread tight to indent hand and secure thread.
Stitch arms to body; 

stitch 1/2" buttons to outside of shoulders.
Head:
Cut a 7" tubular piece of nylon stocking.
Gather one end 1/4" from edge; turn right side out and stuff until head measures 14 1/2" around.
Gather remaining end of stocking tightly; insert into body and slip-stitch in place.
Cut a 1 1/2" circle of nylon; gather 1/8" from edge.
Pull up stitches and insert stuffing to make a ball about 3/4" across for nose.
Secure thread; stitch gathered side of nose to face, slightly above center.
Glue black pompons slightly above and to each side of nose for eyes.
"Rouge" cheeks with crayon.
Working through head from back to front, make French knots for freckles, using three strands brown floss.
Using six strands black floss, 

work mouth in outline stitches.
Cover scalp with 1/2"-long loops 

of brown rug yarn for hair.
Finishing:
Cut a piece of eyelet trim to fit around neck plus 1".
Turn under raw ends of trim at back of neck and stitch together to form collar.
Glue rickrack around wrists and ankles, lapping ends.
Cut remaining eyelet into four equal pieces; place one around each ankle and wrist, gathering to fit as needed.
Glue green pompons to top of feet.
Sew bells to front of body, 1/2" apart.
Cut a piece of red bias tape to fit around "waist"; lap ends at back and stitch together.
Cut two pieces bias tape for shoulder straps, 

criss-crossing in back.
titch ends under belt; stitch 1/4" buttons over joinings.
Fold hat piece; stitch long sides together.
Turn to right side; turn up bottom edge 1/4" 

and stitch in place.
On outside, glue rickrack over hem; 

glue pompon to tip of hat.
Place hat on elf, placing pointed area of hem at back.

ANGEL SOCK DOLL

Materials Needed:
1. Plain white or pale pink stretch sock, size 1 year
2. Sewing thread to match sock, fabrics, and yarn
3. Fiberfill
4. Pink crayon
5. Small amount white cotton fabric.
6. Brown and red embroidery floss.
7. Yellow fingering-weight yarn
8. White eyelet trim 1 1/2" wide, 1 yard
9. White loopy braid trim 3/8" wide, 11" long

Body:
1. From white cotton fabric, cut 11 1/2" x 6" rectangle.
2. With right side inward and making 1/4" seam, stitch 6" edges together, forming tube.
3. Fold tube so that seam is centered; stitch one end (bottom) closed with 1/4" seam.
4. Still wrong side out, 

turn body so that one side edge is facing you.
5. Spread bottom corner to flatten into triangle and stitch across triangle 3/4" above point.
6. Repeat on opposite corner, 

thus "boxing" bottom of body.
7. Turn raw edges at top 1/4" to wrong side. 

Baste along fold.
8. Turn body to right side; stuff, then pull basting thread to gather neck, leaving 1/2" diameter opening.
Head:
1. Flatten toe of sock; mark a line 5" from toe seam. Cut on marked line through double thickness.
2. Stuff toe with a firm, apple-sized ball of fiberfill.
3. Gently push face upward to form 2" long neck. Wrap thread around neck to secure.
4. Insert neck of head into neck of body; tack in place.
Neck Ruff:
1. For neck ruff, cut 3" x 18" piece of eyelet fabric; fold in half lengthwise, wrong side inward.
2. Press short ends under 1/4" and 

baste close to long unfinished edge.
3. Place ruff around neck. 

Pull basting to fit neck; 

secure gathers.
Wings:
1. Cut two 7" lengths of eyelet; 

press short ends under 1/2".
2. Gather unfinished edges to 2 1/2".
3. Stitch gathered edge to each side of body back, having center of each wing curve out slightly so eyelet extends beyond body side.
Halo:
1. Stitch short ends of braid together, forming loop.
2. Tack to hair.
To Finish:
1. With two strands of floss in needle, inserting needle from back of head, make brown outline-stitch eyes and matching straight-stitch lashes.
2. Work red backstitch mouth.
3. With one strand floss work fly-stitch nose.
4. Rouge cheeks with crayon.
5. For hair, cut 60 24" strands of yarn.
6. Wind a strand of yarn around two extended fingers of one hand; tie together at center with matching thread.
7. Make 60 sets of curls in this manner.
8. Tack curls to head.

Angel Doll

27" high

Materials:
Flesh-color velour fabric 45" wide, 1/2 yard
White cotton eyelet fabric 45" wide with one scalloped and embroidered selvedge, 1 yard
Peach satin ribbon 1/8" wide, 3/4 yard
Batting
White pre-gathered eyelet trim 3/4" wide, 1 yard
Light blue felt, one 9" x 12" piece
Light blue grosgrain ribbon 3/8" wide, 25/8 yards
Metallic gold rickrack, 1/2 yard
Yellow rug yarn, one skein
One flesh-color nylon stocking
Two 1/4" black pompons
Aleene's "Tacky" glue
Six-strand embroidery floss, 

small amounts brown and black
Coral crayon
Fiberfill for stuffing
Matching sewing threads

Gather remaining end of stocking tightly; insert into body and slip-stitch in place.
Cut a 1 1/2" circle of nylon; gather 1/8" from edge.
Pull up stitches and insert stuffing to make a ball about 1/2" across for nose.
Secure thread; stitch gathered side of nose to face, slightly above center.
Glue black pompons slightly above and to each side of nose for eyes.
"Rouge" cheeks with crayon.
Working through head from back to front, make French knots for freckles, using three strands brown floss.
Using six strands black floss, 

work mouth in outline stitches.
Cover scalp with 1"-long loops of yellow rug yarn for hair.

Clothes:
Collar:
Cut a piece of eyelet trim to fit around neck plus 1".
Turn under raw ends at back and slip-stitch together.
Gown:
Cut two gown pieces of eyelet, placing hem edge on scalloped selvedge edge.
Cut two sleeves of eyelet. Cut a 3 1/4" slit down center of one gown piece, for back opening.
Turn under raw edges of slit twice and make a narrow hem around slit.
Stitch gown pieces together at shoulders.
Turn under neck edge a scant 1/8", then 1/8" again; stitch close to inner fold, making a casing.
Use a tiny safety pin or tapestry needle to thread 1/8" ribbon through casing.
Gather caps of sleeves; stitch to gown.
Stitch underarm and side seams.
Turn under sleeve ends 1/4" press.
Place gathered edge of eyelet trim inside sleeves; topstitch trim in place.
Place gown on doll and tie ribbon ends into a bow at back of neck.
Wings:
Cut two wing pieces each of eyelet and batting.
Baste batting to wrong side of fabric pieces 1/4" from edges; trim batting close to stitching.
Stitch wings together, leaving an opening for turning.
Turn to right side, press, and slip-stitch opening closed.
Cut a 2 1/2" x 5 1/2" piece of eyelet.
Stitch long edges together; turn and press.
Wrap strip around center of wings; pull snugly; turn under one raw end of strip and slip-stitch in place.
Slipstitch wings to back of gown, referring to color illustration for placement.
Shoes:
Cut two soles (complete pattern) and two uppers (outer pattern, with shaded area cut out) of blue felt, adding 1/4" to outer edge only.
Stitch soles to uppers; trim seam allowances and turn to right side.
Place shoes on doll's feet.
Cut two 3 1/4" pieces blue ribbon; place across insteps and glue or slip-stitch ends to inside of shoes.
Cut two 8" pieces of blue ribbon; tie into bows and tack a bow to center of both ribbon straps.
Halo:
Cut two 14 1/2" pieces blue ribbon.
Overlap ends of one piece 1/2" and glue together, forming a ring.
Glue remaining ribbon around first ribbon, using enough glue so that halo will be stiff when dry.
Glue gold rickrack around outside of halo.
Finishing:
Tie remaining blue ribbon around angel's neck.
