Close your eyes and step into an attic,

In the far corner you see a faded wooden box

with items stacked upon it.

You work your way to it and clear away years of rubble stacked on top,You run your hands over the aged wooden box, and you can tell it was once painted Bright colors that

are now faded with age,

This box placed there by Loving hands so long ago,for safe keeping has long been forgotten.

You lift the lid slowly to look inside,A handmade rag doll,With button eyes and red yarn hair lies waiting

for a child long since grown,

You gently lift the doll out and start to look through the well loved toys that fill the box,

You can tell each toy was special and had been handmade with love and care,from the cloth and yarn dolls to the wooden blocks,train and well loved hobbie horse.

This box contained the memories of a childhood,Once filled with laughter, love and joy, and you can almost see a child as they smile while playing with the toys.....

With the collection of patterns and plans you will find here,

Party Girl

MATERIALS:

J. & P. COATS BEST SIX CORD MERCERIZED CROCHET,

Art. A.104, Size 30: 1 ball each of White

and No. 4-A Mid Pink.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 10.

Petticoat and panties to fit doll

A doll 8 inches tall, waist 5 inches.

SKIRT ... Starting at waist with Mid Pink, ch 49 to reach loosely around doll's waist. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 5, turn.

Now work in rnds as follows: 1st rnd: Working in back loop only, skip first sc, * tr in next sc, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to 4th ch of ch-5 (back opening). 2nd rnd: Ch 4, working in both loops, * tr in next sp, 2 tr in next tr, tr in next sp, tr in next tr. Repeat from * around. Join to top of ch-4. 3rd rnd: Ch 5, working in back loop only, * skip next tr, tr in next tr, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join to 4th ch of ch-5. 4th and 5th rnds: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rnds. 6th rnd: Ch 4, working in both loops, * (tr in next sp, tr in next tr) twice; tr in next sp, 2 tr in next tr. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.

BODICE ... 1st row: Attach Pink to opposite side of starting chain of skirt, sc in each ch across. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Skip first sc, dc in each sc across. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: Skip first dc, dc in each dc across. Ch 3, turn. 4th row: Skip first dc, dc in next 9 dc, ch 8, skip next 4 dc (armhole), dc in next 20 dc, ch 8, skip next 4 dc (armhole), dc in last 10 dc. Break off.

SLEEVE ... 1st rnd: Attach White to first ch of ch-8, ch 4, 2 tr in same ch, 3 tr in each of next 7 ch, tr in side of next row, and in base of same row, tr in each free dc under arm, tr in base of next row and side of same row. Join. 2nd and 3rd rnds: Ch 4, tr in next tr and in each tr around. Join. 4th rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, * work off 2 sc as 1 sc. Repeat from * around. Join and break off. Work other sleeve the same way.

Now work around neck as follows: Attach White to first dc at back opening, ch 3, dc closely around neck, decreasing 2 dc at four equal places—to dec 2 dc, work off 3 dc as 1 dc. Break off.

RUFFLE ... 1st rnd: Attach Pink to any tr on last rnd of Skirt, ch 6, 2 tr tr in same tr, 3 tr tr in each tr around. Join and break off. 2nd rnd: Attach White to any tr tr, ch 3, sc in same place, * ch 1, in next tr tr make sc, ch 3 and sc. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.

Make a ruffle the same way in each of the free front loops on alternate rnds on Skirt. Sew snap fasteners in place at back opening.

SLIPPER (Make 2) ... 1st rnd: Starting at bottom with White, ch 12. 4 dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in next 7 ch, 7 dc in last ch (toe end); working along opposite side of chain, dc in each ch across. Join. 2nd rnd: Ch 1, sc in each dc around. Join. 3rd rnd: Ch 3, dc in each sc to within center 9 sc on toe end, (dc in next sc. work off 2 dc as 1 dc) 3 times (instep); dc in each remaining sc. Join and break off. Attach White to first dc following instep, ch 3, dc in each dc around back to other side of instep, ch 7 (strap), sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across strap, ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across. Break off. Sew strap in place. Sew a button to end of strap. Tie ribbon around hair in bow.

MATERIALS:

J. & P. COATS "KNIT-CRO-SHEEN,"

Art. A.64: 2 balls of No. 126 Spanish Red;

1 ball of White and a few yards of No. 70 Blue Jewel.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.

A doll 8 inches tall, chest 4 ½ inches.

SKIRT ... Starting at bottom with Spanish Red, make a chain 50 inches long. 1st row: Tr in 5th ch from hook and in next 2 ch (bl made), * ch 4, skip 4 ch, tr in next 4 ch (another bl made). Repeat from * across until there are 36 bls, ch 4. Break off. Cut off remaining chain, leaving 4 chains at end of row. 2nd row: Attach White to starting chain at beginning of row, * ch 4, make tr in next 4 ch on foundation chain (this makes checkerboard design). Repeat from * across, ending with tr in last 4 ch. Break off. 3rd row: Attach White to same place at beginning of row, ch 4, working over previous White chain make tr in next 3 tr, * ch 4, skip next 4 tr, working over previous White chain make tr in next 4 tr. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 4. Break off. 4th row: Attach Spanish Red to starting chain at beginning of row, * ch 4, working over previous Red chain make tr in next 4 tr. Repeat from * across ending with tr in last 4 tr. Break off. 5th row: Attach Spanish Red to same place at beginning of row and work as for 3rd row, making Red blocks over White blocks. 6th row: Attach White to starting chain at beginning of row and work as for 4th row, making White blocks over Red blocks. Work in pattern until piece measures 6 inches. Break off. Sew narrow ends together leaving a 1 ½ inch opening at top.

WAISTBAND ... 1st row: Attach Spanish Red to first st at top of skirt, sc in same place, * work off next 2 sc as 1 sc (1 sc decreased). Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd and 3rd rows: Sc in first sc, * work off next 2 sc as 1 sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: Sc in each sc across, sc closely across back opening, sl st in first sc. Break off. Sew a hook and eye to opening.

BLOUSE ... Starting at neck with White, ch 28. 1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook, * dc in next ch, 2 dc in next ch. Repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn. 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows: Dc in first dc, * dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc. Repeat from * across, dc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn (91 dc on 4th row). 5th row: Skip first dc, dc in next 9 dc, skip 24 dc for armhole, dc in next 23 dc across front, skip next 24 dc for other armhole, dc in each remaining dc and in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. 6th row: Skip first dc, dc in each dc across, decreasing 8 dc evenly across—to dec 1 dc, work off 2 dc as 1 dc. Break off.

SLEEVE ... 1st rnd: Attach thread at armhole, dc closely around, decreasing 3 dc across underarm. Join. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, dc in each dc around, decreasing 8 dc evenly around. Join. 3rd rnd: Ch 3, dc in each dc around. Join. 4th rnd: Ch 3, dc in each dc around, decreasing 6 dc evenly around. Join. 5th rnd: Ch 3, dc in each dc around. Join. 6th rnd: Ch 3, dc in same place as sl st, * dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join and break off. Attach thread to other armhole and complete other sleeve to correspond. Attach thread to first st at neck, sc in same place, * ch 3, skip 1 st, sc in next st. Repeat from * across. Break off. Sew 2 small snap fasteners to back.

APRON ... With White, make a chain 18 inches long. 1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. Break off. 2nd row: Mark off 11 sts on each side of center st. Attach thread to first dc marked, ch 3, dc in each dc across to next marker. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: 2 dc in first dc, 3 dc in each dc across, 3 dc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. 4th row: Skip first dc, dc in each dc across and in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. Repeat last row until piece measures 3 ¼ inches. Next row: Skip first dc, dc in back loop of each dc across, dc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. (Frill to be worked later across front loops of row.) Following row: Skip first dc, dc in each dc across, dc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. Repeat last row until piece measures 4 ¾ inches in all. At end of last row, ch 1, turn.

BOTTOM EDGING ... 1st row: Sc in each dc across and in top of turning chain. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in first sc, * ch 3, skip 2 sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * across. Turn. 3rd row: Sl st in first loop, sc in same loop, * ch 3, sc in next loop. Repeat from * across. Ch 6, turn. 4th row: Tr in first loop, in each loop across make tr, ch 2 and tr. Ch 1, turn. 5th row: Sc in first sp, * ch 3, sc in next sp. Repeat from * across. Turn. 6th row: Repeat 3rd row. Break off.

FRILL ... 1st row: Attach White to first loop on dc row marked for frill, sc in same place, * ch 5, skip 2 sts, sc in next st. Repeat from * across. Ch 5, turn. 2nd row: Sc in first loop, * ch 5, sc in next loop. Repeat from * across. Break off. Turn. 3rd row: Attach Blue Jewel to first sc, ch 5, dc in same sc, * ch 1, holding back on hook the last loop of each dc, make dc in next 2 loops, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (joint-dc made), ch 1, in next sc make dc, ch 2 and dc. Repeat from * across, ending with dc, ch 2 and dc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: Sc in first dc, * sc in next sp, sc in next dc, ch 7, skip next joint-dc, sc in next dc. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in 3rd ch of starting ch-5. Break off.

COLLAR ... Starting at back with Blue Jewel, ch 2. 1st row: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 2 sc in first sc (1 sc increased), sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc. Ch 1, turn. 3rd to 13th rows incl: Sc in each sc across, increasing 1 sc at each end of row. Ch 1, turn.

To Shape Front: 1st row: Dec 1 sc, sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 2 sc in first sc, sc in each sc across to within last 2 sc, dec 1 sc. Ch 1, turn. 3rd to 14th rows incl: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows. Dec 1 sc at beginning of each row until 3 sc remain. Work off last 3 sc as 1 sc. Break off. Attach thread to opposite side and work other front to correspond. Sew snap fastener in place.

KERCHIEF ... Starting with Spanish Red, work as for Collar until 13 rows have been completed. 14th to 23rd rows incl: Continue increasing 1 sc at both ends of each row. Break off at end of 23rd row. Sew around head to form kerchief. Sew a small ring to each side of kerchief to represent earrings.

BAG ... Starting at bottom with Spanish Red, ch 2. 1st rnd: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around. 3rd and 4th rnds: Inc 6 sc evenly around. 5th to 9th rnds incl: Sc in each sc around. 10th rnd: Sl st in next sc, ch 4, * skip 1 sc, dc in next sc, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join and break off. With Spanish Red make a chain 3 inches long. Lace through sps on bag and fasten ends securely. Stuff bag firmly with Red thread. Attach chain to doll's arm.

PANTIES ... Starting at waist make a chain long enough to reach around widest part of doll. Join, being careful not to twist. 1st to 4th rnds incl: Ch 3, dc in each st around. Join. For 11-inch dolls work 9 rnds (instead of 4 rnds). Ch 4 for crotch and sl st directly opposite. Break off. Draw cord through sts of 1st rnd.

PETTICOAT ... Cut a strip of 6-inch crinoline hemline binding 18 inches long. Gather across one long side to fit around doll's waist. Sew back seam, leaving a 1-inch opening at top. Sew bias binding around top. Sew a hook and eye at back. Turn up hem to correspond with length of skirt.

South of the Border

MATERIALS:

J. & P. COATS "KNIT-CRO-SHEEN,"

Art. A.64: 1 ball each of White

and No. 126 Spanish Red.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 5.

A doll 8 inches tall, chest 4 ½ inches.

SKIRT ... Starting at waist with Spanish Red, ch 29 loosely to reach around doll's waist. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, * ch 1, sc in next ch. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sl st in first sp, ch 5, make 3 loose tr (to measure ¾ inch) in same sp, * ch 1, 4 loose tr in next sp. Repeat from * across. Ch 5, turn.

Now work in rnds as follows: 1st rnd: Skip first tr, make a loose tr in next 3 tr, * ch 1, loose tr in next 4 tr. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 1. Join with sl st to top of starting chain. 2nd, 3rd And 4th rnds: Work, as for last rnd, making ch 2 between tr groups on 2nd and 3rd rnds and ch 4 between groups on 4th rnd. Break off at end of 4th rnd. 5th rnd: Attach White between 2nd and 3rd tr of any tr-group on last rnd, sc in same place, * ch 3, in next sp make (loose tr, ch 2) 6 times and loose tr; ch 3, sc between 2nd and 3rd tr of next group. Repeat from * around. Join and break off. 6th rnd: Attach Spanish Red to any sp, sc in same sp, * ch 3, sc in next sp. Repeat from * around. Join. 7th rnd: Sl st in next loop, ch 8, * loose tr in next loop, ch 3. Repeat from * around. Join to 5th ch of ch-8. Break off. 8th rnd: Attach White to any sp and work as for 6th rnd. Break off.

BODICE ... Attach White to first ch on opposite side of starting chain of Skirt. 1st row: Ch 3, dc in each ch across. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Skip first dc, dc in next 9 dc, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next 6 dc, 2 dc in next dc, dc in each remaining dc, dc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: Skip first dc, dc in each dc across and in top of turning chain. Break off.

RUFFLE ... 1st row: Attach White to 4th dc on last row, ch 14, skip next 8 dc, sc in next 5 dc, ch 14, skip next 8 dc, sl st in next dc. HAT ... Starting at crown with White, ch 4. 1st rnd: 13 dc in 4th ch from hook. Join. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, * 2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join. 3rd rnd: Ch 3, dc in same place as sl st, * dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join. 4th rnd: Ch 3, dc in each dc around. Join and break off. 5th rnd: Attach Spanish Red to same place as sl st, sc in same place, sc in each dc around. Join and break off. 6th rnd: Attach White to first sc, ch 3, dc in same sc, 2 dc in each sc around. Join. 7th and 8th rnds: Repeat 4th rnd. Break off at end of 8th rnd. 9th rnd: Repeat 5th rnd.

CHIN STRAP (Make 2) ... Attach Spanish Red to side of hat and make a chain 3 inches long. Break off. Make a small bow of ⅝ inch wide red ribbon. Sew a small bunch of flowers and bow to Hat. Sew 2 snap fasteners to back opening on Bodice. Tie narrow ribbon around waist in a bow.

Panama Hattie

MATERIALS:

J. & P. COATS "KNIT-CRO-SHEEN," Art. A.64:

2 balls of No. 37 Dk. Lavender;

and a few yards of No. 65 Beauty Pink.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.

A doll 11 inches tall; chest 5 ½ inches.

SKIRT ... Starting at waist with Dk. Lavender, ch 55. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. Now work in rnds as follows: 1st rnd: Sc in first sc, draw loop on hook out to measure ¼ inch, thread over and draw loop through, insert hook between single and double loops and draw a loop through, thread over and draw through 2 loops on hook (knot st made), make another knot st, * sc in same sc, make 2 knot sts, sc in next sc, make 2 knot sts. Repeat from * around. 2nd rnd: * Make 2 knot sts, sc under double loop of next knot st to the right of knot, sc under double loop of next knot st to the left of same knot. Repeat from * around. Repeat 2nd rnd until piece measures 7 ½ inches. Break off.

BODICE ... Attach Dk. Lavender to first ch on opposite side of starting chain. 1st row: Ch 3, * dec 1 dc—to dec 1 dc, work off 2 dc as 1 dc—dc in next ch. Repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn. 2nd and 3rd rows: Skip first dc, dc in each dc across and in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. 4th and 5th rows: Skip first dc, dc in each dc across, increasing 1 dc on each side of front on each row—to inc 1 dc, make 2 dc in 1 dc. Ch 3, turn. 6th row: Repeat 2nd row. Break off.

SHOULDER STRAP ... Attach Dk. Lavender to front of Bodice and make a chain long enough to reach across shoulder, sl st in back of Bodice, turn and sc in each ch across, sl st in same place as thread was attached. Break off. Make other strap the same way.

HAT ... Same as Hat for Miss New Orleans using Dk. Lavender.

FLOWER ... With Beauty Pink, ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hook, (ch 3, in same ch make dc, ch 3 and sc) twice; ch 3, dc in same ch, ch 3. Join to first sc. Break off.

Make desired number of Flowers. Sew a sequin to center of each flower and sew flowers in place on dress and hat. Sew 3 snap fasteners to back of Bodice. Sew narrow pink ribbon to hat for ties. Tie a piece of ribbon around waist into a bow.

SLIPPERS FOR 11-INCH DOLL ... Starting at center ch 10. 1st rnd: Dc in 4th ch from hook, make 2 dc in same ch, dc in next 5 ch, 6 dc in last ch (tie end); work along opposite side of starting chain to correspond, having 3 dc in same ch as first dc. Join with sl st to top of first dc. 2nd rnd: Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, sc in each dc around, increasing 3 sc evenly over toe end. Join. 3rd rnd: Ch 3, picking up the back loop only of each sc, dc in each sc around. Join. 4th rnd: Ch 1, sc in same sp as sl st, sc in next 10 dc, (work off 2 dc as 1 sc—1 dc decreased) 3 times; sc in next 10 dc. Join and break off. Trim as desired.

MATERIALS:

2 balls of No. 123 Salmon Pink.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.

A doll 8 inches tall, chest 4 ½ inches.

SKIRT ... Starting at waist, make a chain 5 ½ inches long. 1st row: Dc in 5th ch from hook, * ch 1, skip next ch, dc in next ch. Repeat from * across until 19 sps in all have been made. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in first dc, * ch 5, sc in next sp. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 5, sc in 3rd ch of turning chain. Ch 5, turn. 3rd row: Sc in first loop, * ch 5, sc in next loop. Repeat from * across. Turn.

Now work in rnds as follows: 1st rnd: Ch 5, 3 d tr in first loop and in each loop around. Join with sl st to top of ch-5. 2nd rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 5, skip next d tr, sc in next d tr. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 2, dc in first sc. 3rd and 4th rnds: * Ch 5, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 2, dc in dc. 5th to 16th rnds incl: Repeat 1st to 4th rnds incl 3 more times. Break off at end of last rnd.

BODICE ... Attach thread to opposite side of starting chain on Skirt. 1st row: Ch 3, 2 dc in each sp across. Ch 4, turn. 2nd row: Skip first 2 dc, * dc in next dc, ch 1, skip next dc. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 1, dc in top of ch-3. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: 2 dc in each sp across. Break off.

SLEEVE ... Attach thread to 6th dc, ch 10, skip next 8 dc, sl st in next dc. Turn. Now work in rnds as follows: 1st rnd: 2 sc in first ch, 2 half dc in next ch, 2 dc in next ch, 2 tr in next ch, 2 d tr in each of next 2 ch, 2 tr in next ch, 2 dc in next ch, 2 half dc in next ch, 2 sc in last ch, sc in each st at underarm. Join to first sc. 2nd rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 3, skip next st, sc in next st. Repeat from * around. Join. 3rd and 4th rnds: Sl st to center of next loop, sc in same loop, * ch 3, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around. Join. 5th rnd: Sc in each loop around. Join. 6th rnd: Ch 3, dc in each sc around. Join and break off. Leaving 9 dc free at front of bodice attach thread to next dc, ch 10, skip next 8 dc, sl st in next dc and complete second sleeve to correspond. HAT ... 1st rnd: Ch 4, 13 dc in 4th ch from hook. Join. 2nd rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 3, sc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join. 3rd and 4th rnds: * Sc in next loop, ch 3. Repeat from * around. Join. 5th rnd: 2 sc in each loop around. Join. 6th and 7th rnds: Sc in each sc around. Join. 8th, 9th and 10th rnds: Repeat 2nd, 3rd and 4th rnds. 11th rnd: Sl st in next loop, ch 3, 2 dc in same loop, 3 dc in each loop around. Join. 12th rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 3, skip next dc, sc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.

Sew 2 snap fasteners to back of bodice. Cut a piece of narrow velvet ribbon 24 inches long for sash. Tie around waist in a bow. Place a piece of ribbon around crown of hat and tie in a bow at back.
