Forgotten Memories

Close your eyes and step into an attic,

In the far corner you see a faded wooden box

with items stacked upon it.

You work your way to it and clear away years of rubble stacked on top,You run your hands over the aged wooden box, and you can tell it was once painted Bright colors that

are now faded with age,

This box placed there by Loving hands so long ago,for safe keeping has long been forgotten.

You lift the lid slowly to look inside,A handmade rag doll,With button eyes and red yarn hair lies waiting

for a child long since grown,

You gently lift the doll out and start to look through the well loved toys that fill the box,

You can tell each toy was special and had been handmade with love and care,from the cloth and yarn dolls to the wooden blocks,train and well loved hobbie horse.

This box contained the memories of a childhood,Once filled with laughter, love and joy, and you can almost see a child as they smile while playing with the toys.....

With the collection of patterns and plans you will find here,

I hope you can make your own memories filled

That too one day will be found as a treasure.

Pyrénées-Béarn

MATERIALS:

D•M•C Pearl Cotton, Art. 116D, Size 5:

1½ balls Black No. 310, ½ ball Red No. 350,

1 ball Lt. Emerald No. 913.

D•M•C Pearl Cotton, Art. 116D, Size 8:

2 balls Med. Sevres No. 798,

½ ball White, ½ ball Yellow No. 307.

Small amount of Green and Red for Embroidery.

Steel Crochet Hooks, Size 5 and Size 8.

SKIRT: The skirt is worked lengthwise in one piece with a seam in the back. With Green and Size 5 hook, ch 50. Work in dc as follows: 3 rows Green, 1 row Black. 1 row Red, 3 rows Black, 1 row Red, and 1 row Black. Repeat these 10 rows 5 more times — break thread at each color change. Sew seam leaving a 2" opening at top. Run in threads then make a hem the desired size. For waistband, with Black, ch 50. Work 4 rows of sc. Gather top of skirt and sew to waistband. Close with a snap.

WAIST: With Blue and Size 8 hook, starting with back, ch 26. Work 5 rows of dc. Leave off 3 sts at each side on next row for armholes then work 6 more rows. For one half of front, work 4 rows on the first 6 sts then increase 1 stitch at neck edge, every other row, until there are 11 rows in all. Next row, add 3 sts for underarm then work 5 more rows. Work other front to correspond. Sew side seams. For sleeves, ch 24. Work 10 rows of dc increasing 1 stitch at each end of every 3rd row. Work 1 row across the center 20 sts only then finish with 1 row along all the sts.

BONNET: The bonnet consists of one long band that is folded in half and sewn in back. With Blue and Size 8 hook, ch 30. Work 10 rows of dc. Continue to work in dc increasing, for back edge, 1 stitch at end of 11th and 13th row and increasing 2 sts at the same edge at end of 15th, 17th and 19th row. Next row, leave off 10 sts at the same edge then work 2 rows across all sts as in row 19. This is the center of the bonnet; work other half to correspond reversing the shaping. Sew back seam. Work 2 rows of sc along front edge; turn back edge about ½" then sew a tiny strip of white cotton to inside edge.

SHAWL: With White and Size 8 hook, ch 100. Row 1: (insert hook in half the stitch only) Work 2 slip-sts, 2 sc, 1 hdc, work in dc to last 5 sts, work 1 hdc, 2 sc, 2 slip-sts. Row 2: Work same as Row 1 making 3 dc in center stitch. Rows 3 through 7: Work same as Row 2 having 3 sts in center stitch and shaping the ends by leaving off 1 stitch at each end of every row. With Yellow and size 8 hook, work 5 rows of sc along lower edge going into the entire stitch. Embroider the shawl in Green and Red as shown. Attach a Yellow fringe in every other stitch.

Pays-Basque

MATERIALS:

D•M•C Pearl Cotton, Art 116D, Size 5:

2 balls Turkey Red No. 321,

1 ball Black No. 310, 1 ball Red No. 350.

D•M•C Pearl Cotton, Art. 116D, Size 8:

1 ball White.

Steel Crochet Hooks, Size 5 and Size 8

SKIRT: The skirt is worked back and forth in one piece with a seam in the back. With Red No. 321 and Size 5 hook, ch 50. Work 5 rows of sc. Work 1 row of dc. Alternate 1 row of sc with 1 row of dc increasing on next row in every other stitch. Then increase in every 10th stitch on every other row. Work until skirt measures desired length (about 4½" finished). At the same time work two stripes of 2 rows each, 4 rows apart; end with 4 rows of Red. Sew seam leaving a 2" opening at top. Close with a snap.

WAIST: With Black and Size 5 hook, ch 42. Work 6 rows of dc. For fronts, work 3 rows across first 10 and then 3 rows across last 10 sts. For shoulder straps, skip first 5 sts then work 10 rows across next 5 sts; work other side to correspond. For back, work 3 rows across center 15 sts. Sew straps to back and make a tiny cord for front lacing.

APRON: With Black and Size 5 hook, ch 90. Work 3 rows of sc. Work 1 row of dc across center 14 sts increasing in every stitch. Continue in dc increasing 4 sts on 8th and 11th (last) row. Work 1 row of hdc around the three sides.

KERCHIEF: With White and Size 8 hook, ch 50. Work 25 rows of dc or the number of rows needed to make a square. Work 1 row of Red No. 350 around all edges—work 4 dc in each corner to keep them square. With Red, embroider with an outline stitch alternating with a row of cross stitch following the lines of each row.

MATERIALS:

D•M•C Pearl Cotton, Art. 116D, Size 5:

2 balls Lt. Emerald No. 913,

1 ball Black No. 310.

D•M•C Pearl Cotton, Art. 116D, Size 8:

1½ balls White, small amount of Blue,

White and Red for Cocarde.

Steel Crochet Hooks, Size 5 and Size 8.

SKIRT

The skirt is worked back and forth in one piece with a seam in the back. Starting at waist, with Green and Size 5 hook, ch 50. Work 5 rows of sc. Row 6: Increase in every other stitch. Row 7: Work in dc. Continue to alternate 1 row of sc with 1 row of dc increasing in every 10th stitch on Rows 13, 17 and 21. When there are 25 rows, or when skirt measures about 4", work 2 rows of dc in Black. Sew seam leaving 2" opening at top. Close with a snap.

WAIST:

With Black and Size 5 hook, ch 42. Work 6 rows of dc. For fronts, work 3 rows across first 10 sts then work 3 rows across last 10 sts. For shoulder straps, skip first 5 sts then work 10 rows across next 5 sts; work other side to correspond. For back, work 3 rows across center 15 sts. Sew straps to back and make a tiny cord for front lacing.

CAP:

With White and Size 8 hook, ch 3 and join. Work 6 dc in the ring. Continue to work in dc increasing about 6 sts in each round to keep work flat. When there are 10 rounds or when crown measures 4" in diameter, work lace-stitch for brim as follows: Round 1: Sc in first stitch, * ch 3, skip 2 sts, sc in next stitch; repeat from *. Continue to work lace-stitch for 5 more rounds always placing the sc in center of ch-3 loop of previous round. Draw a gathering thread through last dc-row, adjust to fit head. For hatband, with Black and Size 8 hook, ch 80. Work 2 rows of sc. Make a cocarde in sc with 1 row each of Blue, White and Red — work in same manner as for cap. Place band around cap and attach cocarde.

APRON:

With White and Size 8 hook, ch 90. Work 2 rows of sc. Work lace-stitch, as for cap, across center 16 sts (on first row, place sc in every stitch) for 26 rows. Work 2 rows increasing in every stitch by going into the sc as well as in the ch-3 loop.

SHAWL:

With White and Size 8 hook, ch 62. Slip-stitch across first 9 sts then work 2 more slip-sts going under the ch, work 1 hdc, 38 dc, 1 hdc, 2 slip-sts going under the ch, turn, leaving the last 9 ch. The 9 ch at each end will be used as ties. Continue to work in dc increasing in every other stitch on 2nd and 4th row; increase in every 4th stitch on 5th row and in every 6th stitch on 6th and 9th (last) row. Work 5 rows of sc. Gather each end of shawl leaving the ties free.

Size 8: ½ ball Lt. Emerald No. 913,

½ ball Yellow No. 307,

½ ball Red No. 350, 1 ball White.

Steel Crochet Hooks, Size 5 and Size 8.

SKIRT:

The skirt is worked lengthwise in one piece with a seam in the back. With Black and Size 5 hook, ch 50. Work in sc alternating 2 rows of Black with 4 rows of Red No. 321 until there are 27 stripes of each color—break thread at each color change. Run in threads, sew seam leaving a 2" opening at top. Turn up a hem the desired size. For waistband, with Red, ch 50. Work 4 rows of sc. Gather top of skirt and sew to waistband. Close with a snap.

APRON:

With Peach and Size 5 hook, ch 90. Work 4 rows of sc. Work 1 row of dc across center 24 sts increasing in every stitch. Work 17 more rows of dc. For bib, work 7 rows of sc across center 16 sts of waistband. Work each side separate with 10 rows of sc decreasing 1 stitch at center edge every other row. Work 1 row of sc around the edges of apron and bib.

HEAD-DRESS:

The white head-dress is made in three pieces and with Size 8 hook. For crown, ch 3 and join. Round 1: Work 2 dc in each stitch. Continue to work in dc increasing about 6 sts in every round—to keep work flat—until there are 8 rows. For base of crown, ch 76. Work 18 rows of sc decreasing 1 stitch at each end of every other row. Work 11 rows straight. Sew back seam to make a circle. Gather crown and sew to narrow edge of circle. For front band, ch 90. Work 18 rows of sc then work 1 row of sc around all four edges. Sew band to front as shown.

SHAWL:

With Green and Size 8 hook, ch 69. Work 7 rows of dc decreasing 1 stitch at each end and working 3 dc in center stitch of every row. With Yellow, work 5 rows of sc continuing the shaping at each end and at center. Embroider a little red berry with a green stem and two leaves as shown.
